Once thought of as a single mental illness, bipolar disorder is increasingly recognized as a spectrum disorder, with symptoms ranging from less severe to devastating. The NIMH researchers found that people with the mildest form of the condition, often referred to as sub-threshold bipolar disorder, generally sought treatment for other mental health conditions such as depression or substance abuse. Patients with bipolar I have the most severe symptoms; bipolar II patients have more moderate symptoms. Depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorder are all conditions commonly seen in bipolar disorder patients, complicating the diagnosis of less severe bipolar illness. read more

Schnauber said that he thinks that everyone coming back from Iraq has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), “in one way shape or form. A traumatic event is a life-threatening event such as military combat, natural disasters, terrorist incidents, serious accidents or physical or sexual assault in adult or childhood. Another thing Schnauber and Zagami experienced was having a hard time driving when they returned from combat; they felt like a land mine would go off at any time. read more

CALN â” When Matthew Cruise came home from Iraq he was different than when he left. In February 2005 Cruise, a Phoenixville native who now lives in Limerick, volunteered to go to Iraq as part of his service in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Christine Cruise believes all soldiers should undergo similar treatment once they leave the battleground and before they return home to their families. The briefings are held for families before troops return home, during which mental- health issues are discussed, according to Jennifer Sadler, Guard family program specialist. Matthew Cruise spent his childhood in Phoenixville before moving to Ohio, where he joined the Ohio National Guard. read more
