Women who are at high risk for breast cancer should be screened with MRIs in addition to mammograms, according to new guidelines from the American Cancer Society. Their study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that more than three percent of new breast cancer patients had cancer in the other breast that standard mammograms and physical examination missed. Liberal arts colleges reported a higher proportion of students using mental health services (average of 23 percent of students) than at national universities (13 percent). Liberal arts colleges have proportionally more counselors on staff than national universities do, but because liberal arts students use counseling services so much more often, the actual ­availability of counselors is disproportionately lower than at national universities. read more

And while most schools do have some mental health services, they don’t offer programs specifically geared to treat anxiety disorders, the most frequently diagnosed mental illness in children and teens. Anxiety disorders refer to a spectrum of illnesses characterized by anxiety, worry and fear, which include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as specific phobias. According to the ADAA, more than 40 million adult Americans are diagnosed annually with an anxiety disorder, making this the most common mental health diagnosis. Anxiety disorders are also the most common mental disorders to occur during childhood and adolescence. It’s also a time of life when mental health problems tend to emerge.
