A person with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is what we call a worrywart. These people are constantly worrying about anything and everything. Worries and fears control their lives making it hard for them to do anything else. They are in a constant state of worry and are often tense. They worry about the same thing most other people worry about: bill, the mortgage, kids, career, etc. however, they take worrying to a higher level. The constant worrying can affect career, relationships and can lead to low self confidence and self esteem.
Unlike phobias or fears generalized anxiety has no trigger. The person just worries about the simplest and littlest things. Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder symptoms and symptoms for phobias and anxiety are similar. These include shallow breathing, muscular tension and pains, a constant state of fatigue, and trembling. Aside from the above stated, people with GAD also experience trouble sleeping. Most of the time they spend hours tossing and turning before they are able to sleep. Some GAD sufferers also suffer from insomnia.
Normal VS GAD
We all know that worrying is a part of life. What person does not worry? We worry about the state of the economy. But for a person with generalized anxiety symptom, they envision pink slips. Most people who miss a phone call would either call back or file away this information for later especially when busy. A person with GAD on the other hand would worry about the state of the relationship. When we hear about news regarding the war in Afghanistan we would worry about our troops there however a person who suffers from GAD would probably stay up all night worrying that the city might get bombed.
A normal worry would not hinder a person from doing his or her job. Sure we worry but our ability to go on with our jobs or our lives is not hampered. GAD sufferers are usually unable to work because of the fear. Their worry interferes with their social and career lives. People like you and me worry for a short period of time over personal stuff and then get on with it. Our worries aren’t unpleasant, don’t cause us a lot of distress and we are able to control it. People with GAD worry incessantly and over the tiniest things. They are often consumed with unrealistic and morbid thoughts regarding their worries. They are unable to function properly, are stressed all the time and worry constantly, everyday.
Self-Help
There are ways of getting over your generalized anxiety disorder symptoms. Self-help treatments including ways of lessening stress in daily life is highly recommended, especially since GAD has no trigger. One of the best ways of helping yourself overcome GAD is to use your five senses. Whenever you start to feel anxious, take in a great view or go to a museum. Alternatively, you can listen to classical music or whatever genre soothes you. You can also indulge your sense of smell by lighting scented candles. Jasmine and lavender are very relaxing. Ease your worries by treating yourself to your favorite comfort food. But don’t over eat. You can also get into a warm bubble bath or get a massage.
